The Human Double Standard

Two-Faced AnimeIn a 1997 humanistic psychology class at the university I attended, the professor leading the class began discussing the subject of the double standard we humans apply to our favorite attachments for the purpose of defending said attachments, which in turn, is a method of defending our own status.  As an example of this behavior, the professor told a story of an experiment involving two women’s studies classes which went like this:

Several years ago, an experiment was conducted using two different women’s studies classes held at different times.  The first class was told the following story:

A man went to his wife and said, “Honey, I would like to start performing anal sex on you.  I’ve seen it done in porn videos, and it looks like something I think we both might enjoy doing.”  His wife responded, “Are you crazy?  That is the most disgusting, filthy, crazy idea you’ve ever come up with.  The answer is no.  Absolutely not.”

The discussion soon turned into a heated argument with both parties angry at each other for two days.

The second class was told a somewhat different story:

A woman went to her husband and said, “Honey, I would like for you to start performing anal sex on me.  I’ve seen it done in porn videos, and it looks like something I think we both might enjoy doing.”  Her husband responded, “Are you crazy?  That is the most disgusting, filthy, crazy idea you’ve ever come up with.  The answer is no.  Absolutely not.”

The discussion soon turned into a heated argument with both parties angry at each other for two days.

At the end of each story, each class was asked who caused the argument, that is, who was at fault – the husband or the wife.  Both classes unanimously agreed that the man was at fault in both cases.

People are funny.  Consistency is an awkward, disposable inconvenience that we thoughtlessly cast aside when it comes to protecting our individual or group status.

I'm just a regular guy who likes to write about that which I find interesting. I am keeping my identity undisclosed because I am a small business owner and am well known in the community I serve.
